Vela Clásica Jávea: Corporate Identity for a Classic Sailing Regatta Series with Montgó as the Signature Symbol

- What I like
Talking about ElefantAmbulant is talking about brands that are born with the wind at their backs… and others that, quite literally, are born from the wind. The identity of Vela Clásica Jávea belongs to that second group: a brand created to give image—and soul—to a regatta of classic boats organized by the Club Náutico de Jávea within a national circuit, in this case the IV Regata Clásicos Comunitat Valenciana. An event where it’s not only boats that compete; stories compete—wood, sails with character, and a way of sailing that has more to do with culture than sport.
When the Club proposed the assignment, the objective was crystal clear: we needed a brand that identified CN Jávea, but at the same time spoke to what makes this regatta unique: classic sailing boats and the location. Because Jávea isn’t “just any place” to sail. Jávea is recognized from open sea by an unmistakable silhouette: Montgó, that great rock that becomes a visual reference for anyone approaching the coast.
And that was the beautiful challenge: to build an identity capable of uniting club + regatta + territory, without noise, without excess elements, and without falling into the typical generic resource of “just any sailboat.”
A symbol that tells a postcard: classic sail + Montgó
The solution had to be synthetic and recognizable. In the manual you can see how the main symbol combines a classic sailing boat with a clean-lined composition where, in the background, the silhouette of Montgó appears (pages “main symbol” and “main logo”).
This isn’t about “drawing a boat” just because. The boat is represented in a stylized way, with simple yet elegant geometry—a nod to hull lines and the timeless design of these vessels. And Montgó, more than a landscape, works as a geographic signature: a line that anchors the brand to Jávea immediately, without needing to write “Costa Blanca” or explain anything.
That’s the magic of working with natural and territorial elements: there’s no need to invent values, because they’re already there. Montgó speaks of local identity, orientation, permanence. And the classic boat speaks of tradition, craft, detail, maritime heritage.
Respecting the home base: Club Náutico colors, with a life of their own
From the start, we decided to respect the chromatic language of Club Náutico de Jávea. The manual specifies the two main colors of the system: Pantone 7408 C (yellow) and Pantone 301 C (blue), with their CMYK, RGB, and HEX equivalents (#FFCC00 and #005F9F).
Here, color isn’t “ornament”: it’s a direct bridge to the Club’s identity.
- The blue is the sea, the institution, trust, and nautical tradition.
- The yellow is Mediterranean light, energy, summer, optimism… and also visibility (key for signage, merchandising, and event communication).
What’s interesting is that the manual provides one-ink versions and inverted combinations (logo in white on blue or yellow backgrounds, and black variants) to ensure consistency in any application: digital, print, vinyl, embroidery, or screen printing.
Typography: clear, contemporary, without losing elegance
A classic sailing regatta doesn’t call for a baroque typeface. It calls for something current, clean, legible, and that doesn’t compete with the symbol. That’s why we work with Montserrat in three weights: Semi Bold, Regular, and ExtraLight.
Montserrat has a virtue: it’s modern and friendly at the same time. It doesn’t feel “cold corporate,” but it is professional. And in an event brand—where you’ll live alongside posters, regatta listings, dossiers, social media, and a website—that legibility is a guarantee.
In addition, the typographic hierarchy is well resolved: “Vela Clásica Jávea” reads quickly, with a visual rhythm that accompanies the symbol and allows the brand to work both large and small.
A brand designed to live alongside the circuit
Another point I especially like about this project is that the identity doesn’t stop at a “pretty” logo: it’s designed to live within a regatta system. In the manual, versions of the logo appear with the word “regata” integrated, precisely to adapt to different editions or specific pieces of the circuit.
And real applications are also developed: the event website, regatta listings, headers, and merchandising pieces such as T-shirts and mugs. This is key, because an event brand has to be practical, not only aesthetic. It has to work in a website header, on a garment, on a trophy, on an accreditation, or on a banner.
When an identity is well designed, it opens up possibilities: it allows you to be creative across formats without breaking coherence. And that, in an organization that celebrates the circuit year after year, makes the difference between “making posters” and building a brand.
Enjoying the territory: designing with values that already exist
I’ll admit it: I truly enjoyed working on the image of Vela Clásica Jávea. Because when you design with natural and geographic elements this powerful, you’re not forcing a narrative. You’re interpreting it.
Jávea has light. It has the Mediterranean. It has a natural visual identity that, if you respect it, makes everything fit. And classic sailing, moreover, brings its own aesthetic: elegance without posing, beauty without artifice, tradition without nostalgia.
That balance shows in the brand: an identity that feels local and universal at the same time. Local because of Montgó, universal because of the sail and the clean visual language.
I’ll close with a sincere thank you to Luis Nogueroles, Managing Director of Club Náutico de Jávea, for his trust, closeness, and vision. And to President Arturo Miquel, for supporting this work and allowing such a special regatta to have an identity worthy of it.
Because in the end, creating a brand is this: transforming an event into something recognizable, coherent, and memorable. And if you do it with sea, sail, and Montgó in the mix… then the project isn’t only designed: it’s sailed.
